“Three Forms is my first composition for percussion quartet, but probably more notably it is my first-ever piece written for any players other than myself. My music has always been a product of my home studio, in which ideas are generated by making sounds, the most interesting ones are captured, and thus a record is already underway. For this piece, what is certainly a more traditional means of composition was for me a personal challenge of reversing said process: to write a complete work for instruments not under my own roof, only to be heard in final form towards the end of the entire exercise. It emerged as a short instrumental song cycle with a decidedly tonal palette. Structurally it is squarely built on arpeggios and asynchronous repeating patterns, and it draws on my recent involvements with modern minimalist works from the mid-to-late 1970s.” – Erik Hall

Three Forms was composed through Third Coast Percussion’s Currents Creative Partnership, a free to apply to opportunity for composers who are at the beginning of their careers, have less experience writing music for percussion, or are looking to expand their creative work in new directions to collaborate with Third Coast Percussion on the creation of a new work over the course of an entire year.
