The word Autotelic means “having an end or purpose in itself,” and this idea captures both the emotional energy of the work and the spirit of the collaboration. Much of the writing for this piece coincided with a particularly turbulent start to the year, both locally and globally—from the devastating Los Angeles fires in early 2025 (my hometown) to a relentless news cycle filled with heartbreaking headlines. Amid it all, working on Autotelic became a refuge—a space where I could be fully immersed in creating for creativity’s sake. More and more, I see composing not as a goal-driven task, but as a vital form of introspection and exploration. That kind of space feels increasingly rare in a world shaped by late-stage capitalism, where so much work is driven by ulterior motives or measurable outcomes. Writing for these musicians—and working with them directly in workshops—was a powerful reminder of what creative collaboration can offer: a sacred, open space for discovery.
I hope that spirit is felt in this piece—and that it evokes some of the excitement, playfulness, and wonder I experienced while bringing it to life.” – Alexander Noice
